Soroti Development
One of greatest desires of The Africa Fund is to help build local capacity for community support and livelihood projects. Which is why we are excited that the focus at Soroti is moving beyond the carpentry and bakery projects we have been supporting, to embrace local needs in the surrounding rural districts.

We have been supporting work to establish a Development Board and to facilitate community meetings around the region to identify how we can best make a difference in each locality. With your help, local ‘animators’ will be trained at each village to assist the setting up of village development committees and to help implement local projects.
Our experiences in Africa have shown us that building local capacity in this way is key to local sustainable development. We are supporting the Development Board as they seek to build a firm financial base for the carpentry project by establishing a primary timber processing venture producing sawn timber like that in the picture.
To improve utilisation of the bread oven, several local people will be offered training and supported to establish a local bakery business.
The Development Board are also finding out how cooperative action and small amounts of well-timed support can make a major difference to livelihoods.
For example, proposals are being developed for a scheme to purchase fertilizer in bulk to loan to families in districts where soil fertility is declining due to local population growth. Your support will allow The Africa Fund to support these locally inspired projects.
